On October 1, the Governor's Office named Fredericksburg the 100th Music Friendly Texas Certified Community. The Texas Music Office started the program in 2016. The certificate doesn't come with a grant or a new venue, and it adds no concert series. What it gives the city is a set of ongoing duties. One of them is building a local music directory, and Fredericksburg doesn't publicly have one yet.
That gap matters more than the plaque does. Live music already plays here every day of the week. What's missing is one reliable place that shows where it is.
What the city signed up for
The Texas Music Office lists five steps a community completes before it's certified:
- Appoint a Music Friendly liaison who works within a division of city government, and form an advisory board.
- Submit the official workshop petition.
- Host a virtual workshop sponsored by the Texas Music Office, which usually runs 30 to 45 minutes.
- Sign a memorandum of understanding drafted by state staff that covers sharing data from the Texas Music Industry Database.
- Register with that statewide database.
Fredericksburg has done all five. The work after certification is where things get more interesting. Each liaison has to send monthly reports to the Texas Music Office, run advisory board meetings, join monthly regional meetings, send annual updates to the Texas Music Industry Directory and attend the Texas Sounds & Cities Conference. The state also expects the liaison to help work through city policy and build programs that support the local music industry.
The state's checklist doesn't require a city council resolution. Neither the September 15 council agenda nor the posted packet for the October 6 meeting includes a Music Friendly item. The program's own FAQ describes the payoff as raising awareness of the local scene, attracting visitors and helping city departments coordinate with the music community.
The public announcement doesn't name Fredericksburg's liaison. It names one member of the Music Friendly Advisory Committee, Kit Patterson, who also sits on the Visit Fredericksburg board. Questions go to Amanda Koone, Vice President of Marketing & PR at the Fredericksburg Convention and Visitor Bureau. Mayor Randy Briley thanked local musicians and the bureau's staff for the work behind the designation.
The directory is the part residents will feel
Part of the liaison's certification work is building a local music industry database. The state treats it as separate from the statewide registration. In other certified towns, that database is often the most visible result. Visit Granbury's Music Friendly page, for example, pairs a music events calendar with a sign-up form for local musicians and music businesses to join its Granbury Music Friendly Business Database.
Fredericksburg already has some of the pieces. Visit Fredericksburg keeps a live music calendar for the town and Gillespie County, and its business directory has profiles for local musician Ben Beckendorf and for Luckenbach Texas as a venue. As of this week, though, there's no published directory created for the certification.
The Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post shows why it would help. The paper's "Live Music schedule June 2026" table still lists Western Edge. Western Edge has since closed for good. Its website thanks the community for ten years and doesn't give a closing date. Listings go out of date fast in a town where the same musicians play several stages. Kim Carson, for one, has a Monday 5 p.m. Acoustic Pickers Circle at Luckenbach all through October and is also playing Hondo's on Main with The Real Deal at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 10. A good directory would show those connections. Until one exists, here's the network as each venue's own calendar describes it.
A week of live music, night by night
Monday. Luckenbach's October calendar has an Acoustic Pickers Circle at 1 p.m. and another at 5 p.m., the same pattern it follows on most weekdays. Visit Fredericksburg lists Ben Beckendorf at Silver Creek Beer Garden & Grille on Mondays from October through December, though the listing doesn't give a time.
Tuesday. Luckenbach's pickers circles are the main option. Peter Tory plays the 1 p.m. slot and Dickie Kaiser plays at 5 p.m. most Tuesdays this month.
Wednesday. This is the first night downtown gets busy. Hondo's on Main has music Wednesday through Sunday, and its Wednesday shows start at 7 p.m. Crossroads Saloon & Steakhouse hosts the Rebecca Creek Songwriters Series, usually at 7:30 p.m. Rockbox Theater has Songwriter TX with Katie Shore and Bob Charles on October 14.
Thursday. Hondo's plays at 7 p.m. and Crossroads usually brings on a band at 9 p.m. Pioneer Bar runs karaoke from 7 to 10 p.m. with host JD Rose. On October 15, Luckenbach has a free dance hall show with Derek Spence, "One Night Two Legends," featuring the music of Willie Nelson and George Strait.
Friday. Luckenbach offers free dance lessons in the dance hall at 6 p.m. and a band on an open dance floor at 7 p.m. October's lineup includes Michael Monroe Goodman, The Merles, Christopher Seymore & The Western Cosplay and The Alibis. Hondo's starts at 8 p.m., and Crossroads has a $10 cover on Friday and Saturday nights. Rockbox has Darrell Scott on October 9 and Strange Magic, an ELO tribute, on October 23. Altstadt Brewery has Modal Mojo, a Hill Country jazz group, on October 9.
Saturday. Hondo's adds a noon set to its 8 p.m. show on some Saturdays. On October 10, Alex Nicolas plays at noon. Luckenbach's Saturday dance hall shows vary in price. Chad Cooke Band and Henry Williams were $15 on October 3, and the Halloween dance with Gus Clark on October 31 is free. Rockbox has the Lone Star Skynyrd tribute on November 7.
Sunday. Silver Creek has patio music from noon to 3 p.m. Hondo's plays an early afternoon set and a 6 p.m. set. Luckenbach puts an outdoor show on its main stage at 1 p.m., including Jay Boy Adams & the Friends on October 18. The Fredericksburg Music Club holds its concerts at 3 p.m. at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. Alias Brass, a quintet, plays October 18, and pianist Rob Landes plays November 15.
Musical Evenings on Marktplatz isn't on this list. The free country series runs one Sunday a month from May through September, so it's done until spring. Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa keeps its Rhythm on the Vine music going on Friday and Saturday evenings, usually 6 to 9 p.m., with performers listed into December.
Saturday, October 17
The certification gets its party on a Saturday that was already full. The Texas Music Office and Visit Fredericksburg are hosting the celebration at Luckenbach Dance Hall, 412 Luckenbach Town Loop. It's free and open to all ages. Here's how the day stacks up:
- 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Art Haus: Local Artists Showcase at the Pioneer Museum's Staudt-Jenschke Haus, 320 W. San Antonio St. Fourteen artists will be there, including Andrew Eckhoff, Shannon Oelrich, Raul Prado and Elva Salinas. The showcase opens Friday, October 16, from 3 to 7 p.m., with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.
- 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Bestfest at Marktplatz, which the city calendar says will include live music.
- 1 p.m. Clayton Gardner on Luckenbach's outdoor biergarten stage.
- 6 p.m. A two-step lesson opens the certification celebration at Luckenbach.
- 7 p.m. Kathryn Legendre in the dance hall.
- 8 p.m. Theo Lawrence Band, with the official certification ceremony also on the program.
Altstadt Brewery is holding an Oktoberfest program with music and dancing the same day. Carter Creek has Colton's Kin that evening.
In the state's announcement, Patterson said the town was proud to welcome "our friends and neighbors to Luckenbach on October 17" and to celebrate "the musicians, venues, and audiences who keep this community's music alive." Set times and lineups on these calendars can change. Visit Fredericksburg notes that some 5 p.m. pickers circle schedules at Luckenbach can shift, so check the venue's own page the day you go.
The places you go for music, from Luckenbach's dance floor to the Sunday patio at Silver Creek, tell you a lot about the part of town that suits you.
